Ahmed the Elephant
The name of the hotel was derived from Ahmed, a Kenyan elephant with unusually large tusks that spent some of his time in the area of Mount Marsabit, and was the first elephant to be protected under Kenyan presidential decree. Ahmed the elephant's early life remains largely a mystery, but he became famous in the 1960s when hikers in the Northern Kenya mountains spotted him. Dubbed "The King of Marsabit," Ahmed was said to have tusks so massive they touched the ground, a legend that spread throughout Kenya.
